QLD Department of Health

Story

Why our people walk

The Queensland Department of Health is made up of people; nurses, allied health workers, administrators, scientists, cleaners, coordinators - who chose this work because they care about the health and wellbeing of Queenslanders.

Many of them have also seen, in ways both professional and personal, what domestic and family violence takes from people. That experience doesn't stay at arm's length. It shapes why our staff choose to participate in Darkness to Daylight.

The 110km event marks something simple and devastating: on average, 110 Australians lose their lives to domestic and family violence every year. Each kilometre walked is a life acknowledged. Each person who turns up, in the dark, at dawn, alongside their community, is choosing to say that prevention matters and that these lives were not invisible.

The Department of Health supports its people to take part because we believe workplaces have a role in building the kind of culture where safety and respect are non-negotiable; not just in our buildings, but in the communities we serve.

Our staff don't walk on behalf of the department. They walk as Queenslanders, alongside Queenslanders, for the people we've lost and the people we're still fighting for.

    Challenge DV

Challenge DV is on a mission to end domestic and family violence. Through specialised training, powerful advocacy and impactful programs, we partner with all corners of the community - from schools to workplaces, sporting clubs and local businesses - to challenge violence and change lives. Understanding that instilling change takes a collective effort, we provide community members with the knowledge and confidence they need to take a stand against abuse, empowering them to be part of the solution to this public health crisis. Together, we are fostering safer, more inclusive environments for all and creating a world where everyone lives with the safety, dignity and respect they deserve. Lighting the way towards a violence-free future.
