Story
Domestic Violence is something that affects many Australians every day.
1 in 4 women and 1 in 8 men in Australia have experienced emotional abuse by a current or previous cohabiting partner since the age of 15. 1 in 6 women and 1 in 18 men have experienced physical and/or sexual violence by a current or previous cohabiting partner since the age of 15.
In 2022-23 the AIHW recorded 84 domestic homicide victims, 84 unnecessary deaths. In the same period, 1 women was killed every 11 days and 1 man was killed every 91 days.
We walk and run to both remember these victims, raise awareness for victims, and raise money to invest in domestic violence prevention across communities.
Some named victims in Australia include Alison Robinson, Nerol Doble, Bonnie-Lee Anderson, Keria Marshall. We will remember them.
A major case of domestic violence ending in homicide was Gabby Petito who was travelling with her partner across the USA on what was meant to be a trip of a lifetime. A trip that ended too soon for her with her abuser strangling her to death and leaving her body to rot. This occurred just 12 days after police attend on the two for reports of a domestic disturbance. We will remember her.
It could be your sister, brother, mother, father, best friend, friend, or even a colleague. You never know what happens behind closed doors, and DV is far too prevalent.
I'd love your support in raising awareness, and raising funding towards resources for victims. If you aren't in a position to donate, words of encouragement or sharing this page are just as appreciated. Thank you for reading.
